In Focus - Natural Geographic

 David Alan Harvey - 1975

As a single image i think that the first one is really nice, has really bright colours and you can see all the detail in the mans face. However what i think really makes these too stand out is that second image placed next to it with the image in the book he is holding. i think it has a weird feel to it, like time has past but the man hasn't changed. Because surly the image would have had to been sent to the printers etc? maybe he got the same man to pose again exactly the same way. I also try and pick out differences and similarity's when looking at the too. Has a lot of questions.

Julia Margret Cameron - 1872

what i love most about this image is that its said to be the inspiration behind Alice in wonderland what is one of my all time favourite stories. I really like the way that the model seems to have a lot of attitude in her pose, the way she is staring straight down the lens at the viewer with her hand on her hip. What i also really find stunning is the way that her hair is intertwined with the leaves on the tree behind her and you cant really tell were the hair stops and the vines begin.

Wilhelm Von Gloeden

one of my main draws to this image is the reasoning. I want to know why he is holding flowers like this? maybe hes a dancer? I also think that this gives a soft feel to the man in the image gives it a feminine touch. Maybe to indicate his feelings or sexuality? I really would like to know. its just not something you really see all the time, normally its females covered in flowers (or maybe this is a girl but i think its a boy)

The annoying kid with loads of questions!

During one of the lessons/discussions i remember someone saying that they thought that if the person in the image had an eyes nose and mouth then its a portrait, WELL my new question is does the head have to have a body? hahah because if any of you are willing to be my model I'm game for a shoot like this! just let me no yeah!!!

(only half the image as all wouldn't fit on)
Claude Meacham - 1927

Shape

I came across this image when i was looking through the Natural Geographic - greatest portraits book.
One of the things that really draws my attention in this image is the shape of the outline created by the ladies profile. Its so unique with her features that run into her hair that is styled in an obscure but obviously tribal style. I really like the geometric feel to it and i think that its really nice the way that there is a shallow depth of Field in the image so everything in the back ground kind of blurred together to create a backing fro this shape to really stand out on.

Ellie Goulding
I really like the crop on this image. its really close in and basically all it is showing is the face in much detail. I like the soft tone to the image think this is because of the light colours of both her hair and skin tone as well as the colour of the hat. Really nice neutral feel to it. I like the catch lights in Ellie's eyes, i would like to know how this is done because it really lights up her eyes and makes them piercing in the picture (anyone know what type of connection is used).

Gus - Razorlight
Johnny Borrell - Razorlight

Both these images as well have really soft lighting. i really like the lighting on the back ground as it gives a soft/natural feel to it. It isn't too bleached out and bright. I like the shadows under the models chins as i think that this gives them a bit more depth and doesn't make them appear as flat in my opinion. Really quite subtle standard portraiture images.

Eric Klemm - Silent Warriors

These are a set of images that i found on one of the Photography Magazine websites that i was looking at. Im rather interested to know how these have been done. It looks as though they are done in a studio on a white background however something makes me think other wise and i don't know why. i think that they might have been done outdoors due to some of the slight movement you can see in the images, maybe caused by wind? I really like the lighting in the images it makes it so you can see the faces of the models really clearly and you can see all the detail healed within there faces.

Fazal Sheilkh - The Circle

These images were taken from a series of images that were of woman in India. The purpose of the images was to show that the life of woman in this part of the world seemed to be going round in circles throughout the generations. They were not really going any were just doing that what there ancestors before them had done.

I decided to look at the images of the younger members of society. I think that its interesting because when you look at the images of the parents they look sad almost like they know what there life is and that its basically low quality. However i think that normally when you look at images of children like this they look full of happiness and dreams. yet in these images you can see the sorrow in the eyes and faces of the children. Maybe they know what there life's path is?

I think that the fact that these images are in black and white really ands to the intensity of the images and makes them have more emotion. There is nothing distracting you. I also really like the shallow depth of field on the image of the baby, really makes you concentrate on the face. This series of images is one i really like and think that they are really strong and hold a lot of emotion.

Visura Magazine - Alejandro Gonzalez

When we were looking at different magazines and websites the other day i realised that there was a lot of portrait images on this particular website, so i decided it would be a good resource for my research.

''The series Inappropriate Behavior is an inventory of individuals subject to rejection or exclusion because of their sexual preferences. It is a denunciation of homophobia.''

These are just 3 of the series of images. What i like about this series is the crop of the images. That it is really close to the subjects face so that you can see all the detail in the skin, eyes etc. The fact that there is a clear catch light in the subjects eyes makes them look really alive and also i think makes them look full of emotion. I think that these images tell a story, they seem to have a look of anger or a fed up feel. I also like that you cant really tell the gender on some of them. Its a really bold concept and i like it because i think that the images back this up.
