Research - Terry Richardson

I have chose these images of Terry Richardson’s because normally his work is typically set in a white studio and he uses flash to create harsh shadows, these however I think that he’s use flash as I will have to, he has done it to really capture the detail in the subject and make them stand out from the background.  Even though these are more fashion based shots I think that fill in flash is really rather used in the fashion world rather a lot.

I like the composition of this image, the way that she is sat in the bath and leaned over but not looking at the camera. Its almost like she’s thinking or upset. I think that this is quite ironic as this is probably supposed to be a private moment then you have the use of flash, so it makes it all seem fake, like the emotion. The harsh shadows on the bath created by the subjects arm are typical Richardson style, and this is what I expect to see from his work. I think that the little injection of color from the tiles in the background really adds detail to the image and makes it that little more bright and also its different, you get sick of seeing plain white in Terry’s images. (Personally I love his work but it is a bit repetitive). I think that this works as a fashion image and I also think it would work well/better as part of a series.

In this one the flash is much brighter and has the Terry Richardson studio style you expect to see, however I really like it. I think that maybe the white top is too bleached out but over all I like the detail in her face and also how bright it makes the subjects eyes look. The use of flash also darkens the background what is great in this case as without it you would probably be able to see the person on the right more clearly and I think that this would have taken away from the subject and what is going on in the foreground. I like the crop of the image, the way that the top of her head and only half of her arms are in the shot. The main concept of the image is the sauce coming from her mouth so I think that this crop is perfect, you don’t want too much to distract you from the main focus.

I have chose to look at this image because unlike the other images, this one is outside. I have chose this as I will be shooting my fill in flash image outside and think that this is the image that is closest to what I will be producing (obviously not someone frolicking on the floor under the Eiffel Tower). I really like the way that the photographer has composed this shot. I like how he’s got the top of the Eiffel tower in and that the subject is consuming the bottom of the image. The sky makes negative space what is good, as anything more in the shot would make it too busy and chaotic. The styling of the subject adds colour into the shot, this is really important as with the colour of the floor and the models skin I feel like she would get lost in the image without the colour.
