Artist Research - Nina Leen

This image by Nina Leen is really relevant to my personal project as I really want to do it about hair and how it makes us as a woman and is a way that we express ourselves and show our personality. I want my images to be portraits, and slightly more subtle but I think this is a lovely picture and good research for my work.

The fact that the model isn’t looking at the camera is really interesting to me. Is this still classed as a portrait? Well in my opinion it is and I really think it works and is a strong image. I like this because it does really relate to my work. The models hair is done up in a fashion that is of the time and style. But what I like most about the image is the bird clips in her hair. This is what I mean. This tells you something about the person. She seems to have a fun side and also be brave to pull this off so she must have confidence and be fashion forward. I know this without even being able to see her face! I really like the location of the shot. The background, although out of focus due to the mid depth of field, appears to be overlooking a city. This is a really cleaver detail as it looks like the birds are in the sky. Almost like they have been flying and landed in her hair.

After looking at this image I have had a little though, might be a good idea to take a picture of the model like a normal face on portrait then maybe one of the back of their head and show their hair style off fully. This is just a though and something that I might consider. I would maybe present them side by side so you can see front and back at the same time.
