Project Proposal

For this assignment I have decided that I would like my project to be based in the studio. I want to use a digital camera. I have decided to take my project in this direction as I really don’t do much studio work at all and I think it is a way to broaden my skills.

The focus of my project is to show how us ladies are “our hair”. That it is a massive part of who we are and is a reflection of our personality and preferences. I want to try and get a wide range of people with different styles and beliefs that are reflected through there hair. For example colour, style and also what they put on it (hats, scarf’s etc.) when in the studio I want to use coloured gels on the flashes that will clash with the style of the model and most of all the colour of their hair and really making them stand out. The main meaning behind this project is to show that “hair” is a big part and it really gives us a blanked to hide behind. Hair can help give a woman confidence and make them feel better about them self but also can be away to hide and express insecurities. It is an expression of how we want to be seen and how people categorize us. As well as this it’s also about vanity. Overall I want to produce a set of maybe 9 images that are all of different models. Each image will also have a different coloured background, but the lighting and framing will all be the same. They will be portraits from possibly the elbow high up, as I want to truly get a good view and feel of the model and their style. I want to present the images along side each other, maybe each image on an a4 size paper or maybe all the images along side each other on one large (maybe 20x24 inch piece of paper) so that you can see the images and compare them to each other.

Photographers that I am going to look at that I think will help me are the likes of Thomas Ruff who is a German photographer who created images similar to the ones that I want to create. Also look in the Street & Studio book that has images also like I want to produce.
