Fish Market

Going to the fish market was, erm, an experience let’s put it that way. Between the smell and getting ambushed by fly’s I really had to concentrate to get a pictures at all. All that kept coming out my mouth is ‘surly this breaks all kinds of health and safety rules and regs mam?’ but apparently raw meat hanging in the sun with flies all over it is ‘totally fine’ and ‘nothing to worry about’, yehh I’m not so sure!!

Anyway aside from the obvious concerns I am really happy with the shots from this mini shoot (if you would call it that)

Enlargements:

I think that this this image I may have cropped into it too much. I think I would have preferred slightly more of the subjects back at the top of the image so that you could see more of her. However, that being said I really like the image. I think that it isn't too over powering with colour like some of my other images are (even though I like this I don’t think it would work in this image). The timing of the image is also an aspect of the image that I am really happy with. By capturing her working it gives action to the image, it’s not static and still. You can clearly see what she is doing and also due to the fact that I am at a higher angle compared to the subject I am looking down on her what allows you to see into the baskets to get more of a sense of what she is doing and see more of the fish that she is sorting. I think that this image is full of detail.

Compared to the last enlargement this image is a lot further away from the subject. I didn't really want to capture this as I wanted to get up close and personal with the subject. However this is a great establishing shot. It shows you the surroundings of the fish market were the sellers are sat. And I think that this is important as you really get to see the dirty side of it and how unclean it is. In my opinion this really isn't somewhere you should be selling food, especially with all the dirt, fly’s and dust around.  I like the composition, how one side is busy with the subject and what she is doing but the right side of the image isn't. This also creates not such a busy image. It adds negative space for the eye to rest.

Again what I think to be another action shot with perfect timing. I like how I have captured the woman tipping the water over the fish. I find this interesting and would have liked to know why she was doing this? I’m hoping it was to get the flies off the fish but I doubt it. Framing is effective as the subject is centered to the image and you can see people shopping and selling around her but the main focus is on her. The use of flash was needed for this image, although I was trying my best not to use it I think that it has worked well in this image and hasn't created any harsh shadows, what I was dreading. Overall I really like this image and I think it is one that will make it to my book with a bit of editing.

Although going to the fish market wasn't a planned event it was an opportunity that came up and I am really glad that it did. I got to see a market of Goa that isn't normally seen by tourist, and for that I think I got some really nice shots that aren't the typical shot. I think that these are some great images that will add new looks, range and also feels to my book.
