Artist Research - Robert Mapplethorpe

Some of my favourite photographic images are the portraits that Robert Mapplethorpe shot of Patti Smith. Because of this I have decided to explore some more of his portraiture work.

This image is so strikingly beautiful. I just love the way that the subject’s eyes pop from out of the darkness. They draw the viewer in, so intense. The lighting is also beautiful, softly touching the models face, pulling out her features and highlighting her skin. Again really close to the subject, getting right into her face so we can see detail, and the eyes are also really intense from this close proximity.

Square format is something I am working with so these next images are really important for me to get a feel for the different compositions that Robert Mapplethorpe has used. I especially like the image with Patti holding the birds, its just slightly strange I think, why is she holding two doves? Is it symbolic?

These images are some of my favourite photos by Robert Mapplethorpe. I like the composition, the way that the photographer has got most of the subject in the frame. The lighting appears to be natural, maybe from a window.

This might be my favourite composition. I like the way that the model curves round the frame, almost leading you eye round like a wave to the subjects face. I like how you get most of his body in the frame. This is really good use of the frame and not a typical approach. The image is not intense; I think that this may be due to the models eyes being closed. I think that in an image a lot of emotion and intensity is created through the subjects eyes.

Simple and classy, darker tones, I would maybe think this would be stronger if there was more white tones in the image, to really pull the catch lights out of the subjects eyes. But I think that this is his style and it works for him. Detail in the background adds more of a range of tones to the image.
