Book Research - Sally Mann

One of my all-time favorite photographers and someone whose images really interest me and inspire me is Sally Mann. Her style is something I look up to and try to emulate. She is a great example of a personal Hero and no doubt a photographic hero of yours (I hope because she’s amazing). Something that is also important to me is family and I think that’s why I like these images so much, because they are of her immediate family. This makes them very personal.

Candy Cigarette -

"‘Candy cigarette’ is possibly one the most iconic images of 20th century photography. The main focus of the photograph displays a young girl holding a cigarette. Sally Mann featured the piece in the series ‘Immediate Family’. The collection was made up of revealing portraits of her children. The controversy of this body of work gained her first piece of prominence."

This the ultimate Sally Mann image in my opinion and an image that I truly love. I like what the image represents and the attitude that it gives off.  The way that the main subject is stood in the foreground dressed in a girly white dress with her long blonde hair makes her appear almost angelic. Yet pose has attitude and the way she is holding the ‘candy cigarette’ makes her appear older and rebellious. A great representation of the idea that the youth of today are old before there time. The blurred vision of the young boy playing in the background captures the youthful essence of the image. I also like the fact that the other subject is looking and paying attention to him rather than the camera.
