Depth of Field Troubles

So I understand the principle of depth of field, and what I am meant to be doing, but I am kind of getting confused with what the outcome is going to look like. I am trying to do research and literally don’t know where to begin. I feel like I can’t define the difference between mid and shallow. It’s this is almost baffling my head as much as Antony’s light meter class did!
